Coaching Testimonials

Divisional Clinical Director
Commissioning Coaching for Senior Clinicians

Having experienced Matt’s coaching firsthand and found it personally impactful, I commissioned him to work with two senior colleagues in my department. Both are capable and skilled clinicians, but each was being held back from performing at their full clinical potential due to distinct professional challenges, rooted in different underlying causes.

Matt worked with each colleague individually, providing separate, tailored coaching interventions specific to their respective needs. While both individuals were initially sceptical, they quickly became open to the supportive challenge and self-reflection that Matt facilitates so effectively.

Feedback from both has been very positive. The transformation in one colleague has been particularly noticeable. They now present as more sociable, constructive, and engaged, more positive and helpful within the team, and more proactive in addressing clinical issues.

They no longer avoid difficult situations, but instead confront, consult, and resolve matters appropriately. Colleagues who were unaware of the coaching have independently commented on the positive change.

The second colleague has also shown clear progress, particularly in attitude and professional engagement. The shift has been evident and has contributed to a more cohesive and effective team dynamic.

More broadly, the benefit of this work has extended beyond the individuals coached. The department as a whole gains from having senior clinicians who are more confident, collaborative, and constructive. The ripple effects have improved the working environment and, ultimately, the quality of care we provide.

Departmental Lead
Developing Confidence, Reframing Beliefs

Matt is calm, logical, experienced, and knowledgeable, using a range of tools, models, and techniques.

He has helped me recognise my own value, experience, ability, and skillset, and that I am competent to work at the level of my role, even though my own opinion has often told me otherwise.

This has given me both confidence and a new lens through which to see myself.

By identifying my strengths and qualities and challenging my thinking patterns, Matt has helped shift my confidence and self-belief. Through this process, I’ve come to see that some of the ‘failures’ I’ve experienced at work may not have been within my control, and in some circumstances, it’s possible that the Trust may have set me up to fail.

Over the last five sessions, Matt has helped me define my goals and vision, not just for work, but financially as well, bringing back a sense of control over my future.

Throughout our sessions, he has helped raise my self-esteem and supported me in recognising my achievements over the last few years, most of which I hadn’t thought were anything special until now.

Emotional Intelligence, Communication, and Leadership Style

I found the discussion was well-led to help me explore and gain insight and open up to myself about my own leadership style and how I balance the task, team, and personal needs in my work situation. I was able to reflect on deep matters that surfaced through the coaching sessions.

As well as learning about myself, I received many helpful theoretical models of leadership and effects of different styles on my team to help me understand more of the effects of emotional intelligence and strategy on their effectiveness.

I was able to explore several strategies and find those which were helpful to me to adapt my communication style and how I shared problems with my team.

After the coaching, I felt more equipped and more settled with myself to improve my work-life balance and the effectiveness of my teams.

The coaching helped me to reflect on how I could improve my communication with my team and express emotion and empathy in my communication. It continued to explore wellbeing and emotional intelligence and strategies to move from an introverted preference to a more action-centred leadership model for dealing with stress management and developing healthy habits to improve wellbeing and effectiveness in my situation.

I was able to move from a position of pressurised working with some impairment of my ability from some overwhelming stress, through a focus on wellbeing and pacing and reflective review of the situation to feeling more relaxed and capable of working more successfully in my work environment.

Confidence, Self-Awareness, and Leadership Impact

One of the main benefits of coaching has been the guidance and encouragement from Matt, which has allowed me to reframe how I think about situations and therefore how I respond or react. I have greater confidence in my own abilities because of coaching, especially when I’m finding solutions myself, which Matt has consistently encouraged me to do.

As someone relatively new to formal leadership, having coaching has supported me in exploring my own leadership style and how this impacts the people I work with, as well as those I want or need to influence. I’ve gained greater insight and perspective while retaining my authenticity, and I now feel more empowered to act in my role and take control of my own leadership development.

One of the most valuable tools has been talking through a situation I’m facing and exploring different options, whether to act, or to take no action at all. Whereas I’m usually someone who reacts quickly and can often allow emotions to take over, this happens less frequently now. Since beginning coaching and mentoring with Matt, I tend to respond rather than react.
